Disability Employment Services client, Joao, lives with a knee injury, and hasn’t held paid employment in the last ten years.
Having recently turned 60, Joao had begun to feel like his working days were behind him. He believed no one would want to hire him.
His Job Coach, Mukesh, from the Waterloo atWork Australia office, was determined to change his outlook.
They began by moving the conversation to focus on Joao strengths.
“After talking about his past, we identified that Joao had a strong work ethic, was honest and his understanding of tasks was strong,” said Mukesh.
Joao’s past work experience was as a labourer focused on cleaning, clearing, and maintaining job sites. With his knee injury this type of work was no longer an option, however they discussed cleaning as a similar but less physically demanding job.
By working together with Mukesh, Joao’s confidence began to grow. He started to believe that maybe he could find the right job.
Mukesh reached out to employers near Joao’s home. He negotiated with the local hotel to carve a role that was the right fit and unique for Joao.
atWork Australia purchased new work clothes and work boots, and he successfully completed a work trial.
The hotel was impressed by Joao’s attitude and determination, and he landed the job.
“Joao’s passion for work shone through at his trial,” said Mukesh.
“He said the employer has given him an exceptional work environment and is treating him like family.”
A highlight for Joao after starting work, was calling his son in his home country of Brazil and sharing the news that he had found paid employment.
“After ten years I’m back at work. I’m thankful to everyone who has supported me to get this job,” said Joao.
