Recently the atWork Australia office in Ipswich celebrated with Disability Employment Services client, Benjamin, who just reached six months in employment.
This was a major milestone for Benjamin who had been out of work for more than four years.
Benjamin lives with Osteoarthritis and a back injury. He had plenty of previous experience working as a labourer and with machinery but now found many roles were out of reach with his injury.
He only applied for roles he believed he could thrive in and was honest with employers about his back when he landed interviews.
He felt this honesty meant that employers were unwilling to give him a chance.
With the atWork Australia team by his side, Benjamin didn’t give up. He continued working towards his goal of finding meaningful and sustainable employment. He wanted to gain a role in the industry he had experience in, that he could stay in for the long term.
When the atWork Australia team were approached with a role in manufacturing for an operator maintainer, they thought it would be a perfect fit for Benjamin, he was encouraged to apply.
The employer wanted a team member who was reliable, stable and keen to work. All traits possessed by Benjamin.
The atWork Australia team supported Benjamin to purchase work boots to further support his back.
He is now supported by In Work Support Coach, Emma, who is by his side as he learns new skills and is trained for a new position within the company.
“This was the ultimate position for Benjamin. He finds that he has job security and is happy to stay with them long term,” said Emma.
