Christyani is a 63-year-old who lives with severe arthritis in her knees and shoulders. She has difficulty walking and restricted mobility overall.
She had been working as a driver when her work hours began to reduce. She was then connected to the Workforce Australia team in Riverwood for support.
“Despite Christyani’s significant health hurdles, she was determined to regain her independence and continue contributing to the workforce,” said her Job Coach, Shehadeh.
“Knowing her desire to find part-time work and her incredibly resilient nature, we focused on work she can do and enjoys doing.”
Christyani had enjoyed her role as a driver, and knew it was something she could do within her abilities.
The atWork Australia team identified passenger driving as a promising avenue, offering flexibility and the chance to engage with the community.
Job Coach, Shehadeh, motivated and supported Christyani, updated her resume and started contacting potential employers on her behalf.
Over the weeks and with the support of atWork Australia, Christyani was able to secure two part time driving roles.
One as a driver for a transport company, and the other self-employed as a passenger driver.
Chistyani was supported completing the paperwork she needed, and with fuel vouchers to get her started with her new roles.
“We touch base weekly to ensure she has everything she needs, whether it’s navigating new systems, addressing any concerns, or simply offering a supportive ear,” said Shehadeh.
“Her story is a powerful testament to her unwavering strength and the profound impact that a little bit of dedicated support can have.”
“I appreciate atWork Australia for helping me so I can get back on my feet. I’m happy for this community service at Riverwood,” said Christyani.
