“Dale feels like his new role is a dream. His story highlights the impact of tailored and caring support.” – Ananya, atWork Australia Job Coach

Inclusive Employment Australia client, Dale, lives with Agoraphobia. He attended his first appointment with his mother for support and barely spoke.

Job Coach, Ananya, could see Dale was full of anxiety.

“Dale was unable to answer a telephone or use a mobile, and he lacked the confidence to leave his home alone or envision a future for himself,” said Ananya.

Together Ananya, Dale, and his family, made a tailored plan focused on “baby steps” to help him find meaningful employment.

Ananya recognised that employment was impossible without stability. By making professional medical appointments the first step, the service was tailored to respect his mental health capacity rather than forcing immediate work readiness.

Then they used their face-to-face appointments as practical exercises for Dale. This included practice at leaving the house, catching public transport and building confidence.

“I used job role discussion as a tool for speech therapy. By asking Dale to explain why a job was or wasn’t suitable, Dale was required to articulate thoughts and engage in dialogue, building his social stamina without the pressure of a real interview,” said Ananya.

They also discussed Dale’s interests and hobbies. They planned to support Dale to turn his hobby of computer building and repair, into a role he would love. By ensuring the work was something Dale had interest in, this would continue to motivate him.

“We planned to turn Dale’s interest in computer repair, and assembly, into a role. We worked on updating his resume, and practiced interviews with this in mind,” said Ananya.

Dale was connected to our employer engagement team for support to find an inclusive and understanding employer.  When Dale was ready, he attended a real interview with Ananya by his side.

After seven years out of the workforce, Dale is now in a role he enjoys.

“Dale feels like his new role is a dream. His story highlights the impact of tailored and caring support,” said Ananya.
