Employment helps Danielle rebuild herself after experiencing domestic violence

When Danielle was connected to the atWork Australia office in Berala in 2024, she had recently left a relationship after experiencing domestic violence. She was navigating living with unstable housing, supporting and caring for her children, while looking for work to support her family financially.

Danielle was feeling overwhelmed and was living with severe stress. Her experiences had left her with low confidence and self-esteem.

Her Workforce Australia, Job Coach, Alex connected her with atWork Australia’s in house Wellness Services for support with her emotional wellbeing.

Danielle shared with Alex that she needed work that would be flexible and suited to her caring responsibilities and that a role in hospitality would suit her needs.

atWork Australia financially supported her to gain her responsible service of alcohol (RSA) and responsible gambling (RSG) certificates.

“Danielle participated in short courses to equip her with the right qualifications to work in her preferred industry,” said Alex.

“This contributed to building up her confidence in her abilities.”

atWork Australia also helped her to purchase interview clothing, again to support her to feel the most confident when she presented to employers, and to top up her public transport card to attend interviews.

This financial support was important to Danielle as it helped her to progress forwards with her employment goals during this time. It wasn’t long before Danielle successfully landed a role. However, she felt bullied and unsupported by her new colleagues.

Her Job Coach Alex was understanding and supported Danielle. She encouraged her to continue with her Wellness sessions and knew how important it was at this time to have a supportive work environment.

“Due to Danielle’s recent experiences, she often doubted herself and her potential,” said Alex. “Since commencing with atWork Australia, Danielle has grown a positive mindset to achieve accomplishments one step at a time.”

Due to feeling well supported by Alex, and the atWork Australia team, Danielle found another role. She felt like this was the right fit for her and has been working in the role for three months now.

During her recent In Work Support appointments, she shared that with employment, some of her original stress had eased, and she was feeling more motivated than ever to be a good role model for her children.

The atWork Australia team is now supporting her to take the next step in building a lifelong career, by helping her to further upskill by completing first aid training.

“I truly appreciate the assistance from the atWork Australia team, who show genuine care,” said Danielle.
