When Sandra first connected with atWork Australia in Unanderra she described her life as ‘chaotic’.
Sandra was living with mental health conditions. She had employment as a cleaner, but the job was too far from her home and she found it difficult to get to work.
She needed support to build her motivation to find and sustain employment.
Sandra shared with her Job Coach, Het, that she felt like housekeeping was a job she would be interested in.
Het supported Sandra to upskill by completing a short accelerator program in housekeeping.
She was also referred to our in-house Wellness Services for support with her mental health.
“Sandra relies on public transport,” said Job Coach, Het.
“We identified that this as a barrier for Sandra to maintain employment in the past, so we worked on finding a role that was as close to Sandra’s home as possible.”
The atWork Australia team started calling employers on Sandra’s behalf and found a housekeeping role at a hotel that was nearby Sandra’s home.
They advocated for Sandra, and she landed the role.
She was then supported to purchase work related clothing and shoes to be ready for work.
By supporting Sandra with her mental health and finding her a role close to her home, the team is setting her up for sustainable employment.
Sandra will also now be supported by the In Work support team as she navigates this change.
“I’m really proud of how far Sandra has come on her employment journey,” said Het.
