Jack had a dream of working in disability support work.
He had been underemployed for the last seven years, only picking up seasonal work at the local seafood factory.
While he had a goal of disability support work, he was overwhelmed with where to start. He also believed that his past record might prevent him from pursuing a career in the industry.
He was connected with Job Coach, Jess, at the atWork Australia George Town office in Tasmania for support.
Jess encouraged Jack to pursue his dream and enrolled him in a Certificate III in Individual Support as a starting point, and the first step on his journey.
They also started the process of supporting Jack to gain his police check and working with vulnerable people check.
Due to Jack’s past, the process was longer than normal, however with Jess’s support he was able to respond to questions regarding his past convictions and was ultimately granted the checks and approvals needed.
Feeling positive, and on the right path, Jack found a specific role he was interested in.
atWork Australia had worked with the employer before so were able to use their previous relationship to advocate for Jack.
With Jess’s support they tailored his resume and Jess spoke to the employer about Jack’s passion, new qualifications and goals for his future.
“Jack feels that he is ready to enter the industry due to having the skills and knowledge required,” said Jess.
“He will have a chance at a career in his chosen industry and believes this will set him up for a better future doing something he enjoys.”
“Jess has been amazing at giving me the confidence to follow through with my goals, she has knowledge of the industry and gave me guidance on what steps to take so I could gain the required skills,” said Jack.
“atWork Australia supported me every step of the way. I am now looking forward to starting my career in disability support work,” said Jack.
