When Disability Employment Services client, Jenny, was partnered with Job Coach, Shukriya, in the atWork Australia office in Cranbourne, Victoria, she described herself as being “very lucky and so grateful”.
In the late 1980s, Shukriya arrived in Australia as a refugee, she enjoys watching Bollywood movies and gazing at the stars. When she first started as a Job Coach with atWork Australia, her resume showcased a wide range of industries from banking and finance, to being self-employed.
Shukriya has been a Job Coach with atWork Australia for the past two years. She uses her background and lived experiences to support our clients to find meaningful and sustainable employment.
Shukriya met Jenny over a year ago when she walked into the atWork Australia office to enquire about our services. Out of work for more than 10 years, Jenny was looking for the right kind of support to return to work.
Shukriya began by helping Jenny with her self-confidence; encouraging her to be happy and comfortable with who she is, and to not let her barriers hold her back from finding good work. Within a few weeks, Jenny had an interview at a local aged care home.
She was very nervous for the interview, having been unemployed for so long, however, the aged care home thought Jenny would be a great fit for their team, and after 10 years, she now had part-time work.
“I assisted Jenny with mock interviews, created her resume, arranged clothing for the role, and generally kept motivating her to face her social fears and put herself out there to prospective employers,” Shukriya says.
“Last week I received a call from Jenny, who is no longer a client of atWork Australia as she has held employment for more than a year. She wanted to let me know how much more confident she is and how her life has changed.”
Shukriya has now recently been promoted to Service Manager, where she will be able to help even more people, like Jenny, by supporting the Job Coaches and the local teams around her.
