Melissa has worked for most of her life. Then she experienced domestic violence and addiction, causing her to lose direction. She connected with atWork Australia for support to return to work.
Her past career centered around the shearing sheds. However, she believed this was not the best environment for her while she was recovering and wanted a career change.
“Melissa had low self-belief when she first engaged with atWork Australia,” said pre-employment facilitator, Maureen.
“However, she was determined to forge a new career and make a secure future for herself and her family.”
Melissa wanted to look at fly in fly out (FIFO) opportunities as a way to regain her sense of self-worth. Her Job Coach referred her to the Jobs for the Mob program to map out her approach to achieving this goal.
Jobs for the Mob is a program designed to support First Nations clients to prepare for employment. It includes goal setting, job searching, interviewing and connections to community and employers.
For Melissa, the program helped her realise her goals were achievable through small steps. This knowledge provided her with a newfound self-belief. She was more motivated than ever to achieve her goals.
She researched roles and learnt of upskilling opportunities to help her reach those goals such as gaining her Food Hygiene certificate to work in FIFO hospitality roles.
She learned she needed a police clearance and a white card. The atWork Australia team was by her side and has connected her to the first steps to achieve these goals, including starting on her police clearance and connecting her to study.
“Melissa said that she now wants to get up early every day and be productive,” said Maureen.
“She has even started jogging again every morning to start the day.”
Melissa is well on her way to reaching her goals, supported every step of the way by the atWork Australia team.
“I want to thank Jobs for the Mob. It really stimulated my brain again. It was very interesting to learn what jobs are available and that anybody can do this,” said Melissa.
