Michael is a 61-year-old from Mount Druitt who spent more than 20 years working in carer roles before being made redundant.
He had been looking for work for more than six years. Despite his long break from the workforce, his strong work ethic and willingness to learn quickly stood out to his Job Coach and support team in Mount Druitt.
Michael’s goal was to return to steady employment, regain financial stability, and prove to himself that it’s never too late to start again.
He had expressed interest in cleaning roles, so his Job Coach referred him into the Identify and Prepare for Employment program (IPEP) with an employer in the cleaning industry.
Given his time away from the workforce, the atWork Australia team knew the structured, supportive group setting of the program would help him refresh his soft skills and regain his confidence.
The session focused on teamwork, communication, feedback skills and understanding the employer’s expectations in the role. It included meeting directly with the employers, preparing a resume for the specific roles and interview preparation.
Through the IPEP, Michael rediscovered his confidence, sharpened his interview skills, learned about commercial cleaning standards and gained a clearer sense of direction. With assistance from his Job Coach, and the atWork Australia team, he prepared a targeted application leading to a successful job offer soon after.
The flexibility of the role, including split shifts from 5 am-9 am and 2 pm-6 pm, also suited his lifestyle, making it easier for him to transition back into full-time work while maintaining balance, without feeling overwhelmed.
“Michael takes pride in his work, enjoys being part of a team again, and has regained the confidence he once thought was lost,” said program facilitator, Shameer.
“He received assistance from atWork Australia to cover his Working with Children Check and work shoes, both required for the role. This practical support made a huge difference. It eased the financial pressure and allowed him to focus on preparing for his first day with confidence.”
“He’s proud to share his success with family and friends, proving that age and time away from work do not define what is possible. His positive attitude shows that with the right support, it’s never too late to learn a new industry.”
“After being out of work for years, at my age I didn’t think I would get another chance. atWork Australia helped me get ready and reminded me of what I can do. It feels great to be working again,” said Michael.
