First Nations client, Jay, moved to Sydney in the hopes of greater employment opportunities. He had recently secured a job as a commercial painter and was excited for his move.
He contacted Job Coach Ananya in preparation for his move to Sydney. Ananya supported Jay with work clothing and shoes so he could start his new role.
Soon after he moved to Sydney, Jay realised the painting role was not going to be full time work. He was devastated. He shared with Ananya that he regretted moving to Sydney.
Jay had worked as a painter for over 10 years and didn’t know what direction to take now.
Jay continued to meet with Ananya fortnightly. Paying rent and purchasing food was becoming a big challenge without employment. His motivation and mental health were beginning to be impacted. Having recently moved to Sydney, Jay wasn’t aware of the local services and had a minimal support network.
Jay was connected to atWork Australia’s Wellness Services for assistance with his mental health. He was provided with food and fuel vouchers, and Ananya connected Jay to local services for a free feed, and extra support.
He needed work quickly, so Ananya connected Jay to our Employer Engagement team to discuss alternative career options. Ananya continued to encourage and motivate Jay and even showed him new ways to search for jobs online.
Ananya encouraged Jay to apply for jobs outside of painting, and soon Jay landed a job in a boutique hotel as a general hand.

“Jay is thriving in his new role and is hoping to increase his hours.”
