Nikolas enters his dream industry with support from atWork Australia

28-year-old, Nikolas, is a principal carer parent to his children, one of whom lives with a disability.

At his first appointment with atWork Australia, Davoren Park in February, he shared that his employment goal was to work as a disability support worker, so that he could make a difference in the lives of others.

Disability Employment Services client, Nikolas also shared that he lives with anxiety, and he felt returning to work would support his mental health. For Nikolas, his biggest barrier to employment was having the financial ability to start work in a new industry as he previously had work experience in labouring and hospitality. He also needed a role that would be flexible to his caring commitments.

Job Coach, Brittany, supported Nikolas to develop his resume and complete a CV check. She spoke to him about potential traineeships in individual support. She also shared his goals with Job Coach, Corey.

Corey was working with local employer All Care Community Support and organised an interview for Nikolas, ensuring the role would be flexible to his caring needs. He was interested and was successful in his interview.

However, to begin the role there were 12 requirements including a Working with Children Check, NDIS check and police check. Along with qualifications including First Aid and CPR, Manual handling and medication assistance. Nikolas also had to be enrolled in study for a Certificate III or higher in Individual Support. All these items required a financial commitment, something Nikolas needed the support of atWork Australia to achieve in the time frame required to start work.

Brittany and the team worked quickly to support Nikolas gain all the requirements he would need, including purchasing a laptop for him to complete his study. By having the support of the team to help him navigate and manage all the requirements helped him work through this large task without exaggerating his anxiety.

Nikolas has now started his dream job. Job Coach Brittany has discussed with Nikolas his ability to access our in-house Wellness Services if he feels he needs additional support with his mental health during this transition to work.

“Since coming to atWork Australia, I have felt heard and that my best interests were the top priority. I feel very lucky to be doing what I love,” said Nikolas.
