At 24-years-old, Sean had big responsibilities. He was the primary carer for his parents. He hadn’t held paid employment since high school and found it hard to find work that would fit around these responsibilities.
“With limited work history, much of his time was devoted to caring for his parents, who have ongoing health issues,” said atWork Australia pre-employment facilitator, Shameer.
“Alongside his siblings, family has always been at the centre of his life. Sean was wanting independence while still supporting his parents, so he turned to atWork Australia for support.”
Sean’s short-term goal was to find flexible employment around his commitments, in the long-term he wanted to build a meaningful and sustainable career.
The atWork Australia team identified the right opportunity for Shaun with a large employer partner who could help him achieve both of his goals.
He was referred to an Identify and Prepare for Employment (IPEP) session which is a tailored pre-employment training specific to the employer. The program would support Sean to gain the skills the employer was looking for, prepare for the interview, and learn more about the culture of the business to ensure it was the right fit for him.
“His journey began with an IPEP, where he met with me, and the atWork Australia Partnership Manager, Roger, to learn more about opportunities with the employer,” said Shameer.
“Following this, in a supportive group setting, Sean gained confidence and developed key soft skills such as teamwork, active listening, giving and receiving feedback.”
“He also received guidance on applications, interview preparation, and had the opportunity to engage directly with the employer, who visited the session to speak with clients.”
With consistent support from his Job Coach, Christelle, and the atWork Australia team, Sean successfully secured a full-time role with the employer as a school cleaner.
The split shifts from 5am to 9am, and 2pm to 6pm allowed him to continue caring for his parents while achieving financial independence.
“Most importantly, he now feels proud that he can contribute financially while continuing his role as a carer at home,’ said Shameer.
“I’m proud to have secured a job that works around my family commitments. Thank you atWork Australia,” said Sean.
