Gail has worked as a store person for the last 21 years. She enjoyed the role and was committed and dedicated to her work.
Then a workplace accident meant she suddenly needed to retire from the role.
Feeling lost, Gail was connected to atWork Australia in Chester Hill, and Job Coach, Angela.
“After hearing the news, Gail was devastated and disappointed after a long-term career,” said Angela.
Together, Angela and Gail discussed career paths, and at 66 years old, Gail returned to study.
She was first referred to the skills for education and employment (SEE) program for digital skills training.
Then she completed a Certificate II in work skills, a Certificate III in business and a Certificate II in retail.
“Gail enjoyed the class environment. It gave her a sense of belonging again and the trainers were fantastic,” said Angela.
Through this study, Gail not only gained qualifications but confidence to pursue a new career path.
“Gail had a good routine again, she was able to set goals in her life and felt she had a new purpose. She said she felt like she was a role model to her family and grandchildren,” said Angela.
“This had a really positive effect on her.”
Just over two years after her sudden retirement, Gail was working again as a customer service / kitchen hand in hospitality.
“I feel I have opened a door that was shut. It’s opened with new opportunities and a new adventure to look forward to,” said Gail.
