Disability Employment Services client Mirvat had all but given up on working.
She was living with depression, medical conditions resulting in chronic pain, and had recently had surgery. She was also a parent to three children.
Mirvat hadn’t worked in the past fifteen years, and she was confident she had no skills or ability to work.
Job Coach, Mukesh, believed otherwise. He encouraged Mirvat, letting her know he believed in her potential.
While it was a long road for Mukesh, he worked with Mirvat to develop enthusiasm to search for work and look at all job possibilities.
To begin with, Mukesh would organise interviews for Mirvat, and she wouldn’t show up. She was letting her negative thoughts win the battle.
Mukesh realised he would have to find Mirvat the perfect opportunity for her, to encourage that enthusiasm.
Mukesh successfully lined up an interview with a hairdressing salon shop owner. The role was nearby to Mirvat’s home, and the shop owner spoke the same language as her – Arabic.
“I let Mirvat know that the work was light duties, and that the shop owner understood her limited experience and was happy to train her, and teach her the role,” said Mukesh.
Mirvat agreed to a work trial, and Mukesh attended the trial with her for support.
She spent two hours with customers and assisting the head barber. She felt like part of the community and valued for her assistance.
The next day, Mukesh had a chat with the owner in detail where he was happy and offered Mirvat a Salon Assistant role for 15 hours a week.
