Werjina is a 64-year-old refugee who hasn’t been in paid employment since arriving in Australia over 7 years ago.
She wanted to work but needed atWork Australia’s support to connect her to employers who would be willing to give her a chance.
With limited English skills, limited employment history, and her age, as major barriers to employment. Werjina also was unable to drive so relied on public transport.
These barriers made it hard for Werjina to find employment that was the right fit for her.
Job Coach, Tamar, worked with Werjina, recognising her determination and desire to find meaningful employment.
Tamar started calling employers on her behalf, explaining her strengths and her desire to work.
Tamar focused on finding a job that was close to public transport, making it easy for Werjina to commute. Light in duties, suitable for her physical health and an employer who would be flexible with work experience.
Soon Tamar found the right employer for Werjina.
“This personalised approach helped Werjina overcome her barriers and secure a role that supports her goal of staying active and independent,” said Tamar.
“Since starting work, Werjina has shared that she feels more valued and happier. Although it was a bit challenging at first, she has now been working for over four months and is proud to continue in her role.”
“The job has helped her feel active, independent, and connected, showing that with the right support, barriers like age and health can be overcome.”
“I’m so proud to be working again. Tamar believed in me and never gave up. Her support and encouragement gave me the strength to keep going,” said Werjina.
