Workforce Australia client, John, walked into our Port Pirie atWork Australia office one day looking for more assistance to find employment.
He wanted more support than the online platform and requested assistance to transition to in person servicing.
John had started his own gardening business, but he found there just wasn’t enough work around to sustain his self-employment.
He had tried to find employment himself but had lost his confidence and was feeling disheartened after all the unsuccessful applications.
He was interested in aged care or support work when he first connected with atWork Australia, however working in gardens, John had limited digital technology experience.
His Job Coach referred him to the Career Transition Assistance program for support with his digital literacy, and to improve his confidence and skills to become more competitive in the local labour market.
Once he had completed the program, Employer Engagement Consultant, Steven met with John to discuss work options, and what support he needed to find work.
“John said he really wanted to get a support worker job and preferred to work with people living with disability,” said Steven.
Steven had a great relationship with an employer working in that space and approached them on John’s behalf.
“They were keen to get John in for a chat and go from there,” said Steven.
“As soon as John met the employer, they just clicked. They offered him a job there and then.”
John was happy to have found employment. Steven then supported him with his onboarding and online training for the role, using his new digital skills.
“Following up with the employer, they are extremely happy with John and their clients love him,” said Steven.
“Having work means John is now so full of life and happy. When he finished his first shift he came straight to the office, thanking us for our help and connecting him with this role.”
