Disability Employment Services client, Grace, lives with anxiety. It took her some time to become familiar and comfortable with the atWork Australia team in Wollert.
Grace had not held paid employment for 20 years as she took time off to care for her children, she still had a young child at home.
She shared with her Job Coach, Con, that her main goal was to find work that she could balance with her parenting commitments.
Originally Grace considered going back to administration work. She had worked in this industry for 10 years before having children but needed to update her skills.
atWork Australia supported her to complete a Certificate III in Business through an online provider.
However, she realised in this time her goals had changed. If she was going to be working, she wanted to make sure it made her feel fulfilled by helping others, and for an employer where she felt appreciated.
After discussing it with her Job Coach, Grace through a teaching role, or teaching assistant role would suit her caring commitments, being in school hours, but where she could help people.
She was then supported to complete a Certificate III in School Based Education.
After finishing the course, she began to look for roles. Con was notified of a Support Worker role available which he felt suited Grace’s needs of helping people and working within school hours.
Grace was open to giving the role a go, and she is enjoying it. She is now working up to 15 hours a week in Aged Care as a support worker.
“Thank you for all your help. My guardian angels,” said Grace.
