27-year-old, Colleen, who lives with an intellectual disability, was connected with atWork Australia to start her journey into employment.
She worked with her Job Coach, Thomas, to create a goal-based plan tailored to her short-term and long-term goals.
Colleen was hoping to someday work in a café. She wanted a job where she felt like part of the community.
Another one of Colleen’s goals was to gain her driver’s licence. She felt her limited transport options, and relying on others was impacting her ability to gain work.
Colleen worked with Thomas, who helped her better understand the questions for her learner’s permit, and she successfully gained her learners licence.
She was also supported to upskill with a barista course and digital literacy.
With her new skills and qualifications, Thomas supported Colleen to update her resume. Then they tackled one key skill at a time, such as how to apply for applications online, and writing cover letters.
They are now starting to focus on speaking to employers in preparation for any upcoming interviews Colleen may have.
In the meantime, Colleen continues to focus on her goal of gaining her driver’s licence, supported by the atWork Australia team.
Colleen now feels as though she can confidently go forward with applying for jobs online, and is looking forward to one day reaching her goal of becoming part of the community, working at a local café
“With the help of my Job Coach, I can step forward into more options for work,” said Colleen.
