21-year-old First Nations client, Darren, had recently moved out of his family home, and was looking for work. He was connected to the Workforce Australia team in Batemans Bay.
Darren wasn’t sure what kind of work he wanted to do, but he was willing to give anything a go. Joanne, Employer Engagement Consultant, had a few roles she offered to Darren which he accepted.
He worked for a short time as a support worker and in cleaning, where he was connected to In Work Support Coach, Charlene.
He shared with Charlene that while he appreciated the opportunities, he simply wasn’t enjoying the work.
So, the atWork Australia team tasked Darren with taking some time to really think on what he might like to do, and research the job. They provided advice on what kinds of things might suit his interests and shared pros and cons of different industries.
To support him to be able to do this research the atWork Australia team purchased Darren a laptop.
“We wanted to help Darren find something sustainable, something he would be happy with,” said Charlene.
“He decided he really wanted to work in traffic control, and we wanted to make that happen for Darren.”
The atWork Australia team helped Darren enroll in a traffic control course.
He was also connected to the Australia Flexible Pavement Association (AfPA) workers on foot awareness program to enhance his onsite safety skills.
“Darren told us he loved the training, this showed he was on the right path into a role he would enjoy,” said Charlene.
As part of the course, an employer connected with Joanne attends the training. The employer has a quick chat with the trainees to see if anyone would be a good fit for them. They shared with Joanne they thought Darren would be great for them, and he was connected with a role at the end of his training.
“It’s great to see Darren progress towards something he really wants to do,” said Joanne.
“The employer is very happy to look after Darren and train him on the job.”
“I am so excited. I can’t wait to start the job. Thank you to atWork Australia for helping me along my journey, never judging me, and just showing me support always,” said Darren.
