“What I found the best, was to have goals, plan them out, and then smash them.” – Dean, atWork Australia client

First Nations client, Dean, admits to making poor choices in his youth. After some time spent in prison, Dean is rebuilding his life and wants to give back to young people facing similar barriers and choices.

Dean’s long term employment goal was to secure meaningful work in community services specifically in the youth sector.

Job Coach, Jess (pictured above with Dean), referred Dean to atWork Australia’s in-house program, Jobs for the Mob to work on his goal setting and make a plan to reach his long-term dream.

Included in his plan was tailoring his resume and cover letter towards this career goal.

He also completed his diploma of community services at TAFE and work experience with First Nations youth, volunteering in the Street University Deadly Dreaming Program.

atWork Australia provided further support with fuel vouchers to attend his volunteering commitments.

“Dean shared that he was going to use some of the skills he learnt in the Jobs for the Mob program during his volunteering including open discussion, and practical goal mapping activities,” said Jobs for the Mob facilitator, Shameer.

“He wants to encourage young people to set goals, speak openly, and break their plans down into achievable steps.”

Dean soon secured employment with a youth rehab centre and then received a call from Street University also offering Dean ongoing work.

The atWork Australia team worked with Dean during this process to help keep him accountable towards his goals, providing encouragement and support.

Working with atWork Australia Dean gained the clarity he needed in his career direction, strengthened his professional skills, and built confidence to present himself as a capable employee and mentor.

“Dean’s self-belief has grown significantly, and he sees himself as someone who can positively influence young people,” said Shameer.

“His journey reflects resilience, determination, and a commitment to breaking cycles within his community.”

“What I found the best, was to have goals, plan them out, and then smash them,” said Dean.
