Support tailored to his culture helps Keith to progress to employment

First Nations client, Keith, was connected to the atWork Australia team in Campsie for support to find employment.

Keith had been out of work for some time when he started working with Workforce Australia Job Coach, May.

He shared that he enjoyed upskilling and had recently obtained a white card and forklift licence, but even with these new skills he hadn’t been able to find work.

May worked together with Keith and as she got to know him, could see he would benefit by participating in tailored cultural support.

He was referred to our internal pre-employment course Jobs for the Mob, and connected to external mentoring service, Tribal Warriors.

Jobs for the Mob, supports Indigenous clients with the foundational skills to engage in the workforce. It focuses on how to progress towards home, education, and work goals.

During the program, Keith learnt interview techniques and more specifically how to answer behavioural and situational questions successfully.

He was further supported by the Tribal Warriors mentoring service who helped him to build his confidence.

“Keith participated and continued with his positive mindset,” said May.

“He began to expand his job search while becoming more resilient to setbacks.”

May supported Keith in many ways including with food and transport vouchers. She also connected him to our internal employer engagement consultant who approached businesses on Keith’s behalf.

He was soon connected to a role as a forklift driver.

“On his first day, Keith showed up to work in black shorts as he didn’t own any black pants,” said May.

“Due to workplace health and safety, he was asked to come back in tomorrow with long pants. Keith came to the atWork Australia office, and we went right to the shop to buy him some pants. He returned to work that same day.”

Keith worked in the role for three months, and while his circumstances have changed and he is now looking for new work, the experience has motivated him to never give up.

“Keith is a lot more confident now and has expressed his gratitude to be working with atWork Australia,” said May.

Every year, atWork Australia help thousands of clients like Keith expand their skills and qualifications to help them gain the right job with the right employer. Call us today on 1300 080 856 or enquire online to find out how we can help you meet your career goals.
