Toyah is a motivated 19-year-old First Nations woman with a love for motorbike riding and a determination to find meaningful work.
Toyah had held employment in warehousing but found the long 10 hour shifts unsustainable. Seeking a better work-life balance and career stability, Toyah was connected to atWork Australia.
To begin her journey, Toyah was referred into Jobs for the Mob. a pre-employment program to help support her with her goal setting and finding a career direction.
“Jobs for the Mob provided a culturally supportive environment where Toyah could connect with her peers, ask questions and feel inspired about her future career possibilities,” said facilitator, Shameer.
Toyah’s desire for work life balance and flexibility led her to want to work in a commercial cleaning role.
She then participated in an information session with an employer who had commercial cleaning roles. Toyah showed genuine interest and wanted to work for the company who hosted the information session.
To support her next step, Toyah was referred into the Identify and Prepare for Employment Program, whichwas a specific industry training program for roles with the employer.
The training included understanding commercial cleaning, information about the employer expectations including KPI’s, teamwork and information about the application process including interview preparation.
“Toyah’s journey reflects strong personal growth, increased confidence and a clear path to stable employment,” said Shameer.
Following this tailored support, Toyah successfully secured a full-time role working 5am to 9am and then 2pm to 6pm which suited her lifestyle.
“Her story captures how workshops and tailored support helped her build confidence, gain job-ready skills, and move into meaningful work that fits her lifestyle,” said Shameer.
“It’s a wonderful example of how culturally responsive programs can create real change for young First Nations clients.”
“The IPEP program provided hands-on preparation for a role Toyah was interested in, including direct interaction with the employer,” said Shameer.
