“Adrian has new social skills and a self-belief that he can find work he will enjoy.” – Kylie

Adrian attended the atWork Australia office in Hoppers Crossing with his dad to support him. They were looking for support to progress Adrian into employment.

Adrian lives with an Intellectual Disability and wasn’t sure what type of work he could do, or if he was able to work. His Job Coach, Thomas, could see that Adrian had low motivation to progress into employment.

After getting to know Adrian, Thomas learnt he had a passion and love of sport, especially Basketball.

atWork Australia was working with Melbourne United Basketball team to provide clients with meaningful work experience. This was the perfect opportunity for Adrian.

Adrian and his dad started volunteering at the Melbourne United games.

“Adrian is always smiling and very keen the moment he walks through the doors at the stadium, “said facilitator, Kylie.

“He knows all the players.”

By volunteering at an event, he was passionate about, it motivated Adrian to get him out of the house. His confidence grew and he felt more capable of finding employment.

“Since participating, Adrian has returned to playing Basketball himself,” said Kylie.

“He now wants to look for paid work to continue to build his social network.”

Being able to participate in work experience with his dad by his side, was the perfect stepping stone into moving out of his comfort zone.

atWork Australia is now supporting Adrian to search for work in open employment.

“Adrian has new social skills and a self-belief that he can find work he will enjoy,” said Kylie.
