55-year-old client, Wen, had been the primary carer for her mother for most of her life.
The last time she had held paid employment was 24 years ago, and at that time she was a barista at a local café.
When Wen’s mother passed away, she was connected with atWork Australia for support to re-enter the workforce.
atWork Australia Job Coach, Helen, first connected Wen to our in-house Wellness Services for support with her grief after losing her mother.
To begin with, Wen thought she would return to working in a café, but as she had been out of the industry for so long, she found it hard to land work.
She was referred to a micro-credential course to update her skills in a course called ‘prepare and serve expresso coffee’.
Wen worked closely with atWork Australia’s employer engagement team and carefully considered roles they approached her with.
She was particularly interested in a parcel sorter role, so Helen supported Wen by tailoring her resume for the role.
Wen successfully landed an interview and, in the lead up, Helen worked with her to practice her interview skills in English.
They also decided that it would help Wen’s confidence if she practiced driving to the interview in advance so she knew the location, parking and how long it would take to arrive.
Wen did the practice drive the day before, and learnt the job wasn’t far from her home.
On the day of the interview, she was feeling very confident and landed the role. Her first paid role in 24 years.
“Wen is very happy with her new role,” said Helen.
