52-year-old, Disability Employment Services client, Guy, lives with heart disease.
He was a chef for his whole career and had his own café but due to the severity of his health he could no longer continue in this line of work.
His relationship broke down around the same time leaving Guy depressed, and unmotivated.
When he was well enough to return to part time work, he was connected with Ananya at the atWork Australia office in Riverwood.
“When I met Guy, he had no idea what he could do or what he wanted to do with work going forward,” said Ananya.
“He was focused on all the things he could no longer do.”
They spent many meetings talking about what Guy could do, what he might be interested in and what he would enjoy. After a few appointments Guy decided that he would like to work on a forklift. He enjoyed driving and he believed this was something that he could do.
Ananya organised for Guy to complete his forklift ticket. However, having no experience in the industry was making it hard for Guy to stand out among other applicants.
“While work as a forklift driver wasn’t working out for Guy, the support and motivation he was receiving from atWork Australia encouraged him to keep trying,” said Ananya.
The employer engagement team kept looking for a role for Guy, and in the meantime Ananya and Guy discussed other possibilities.
As Guy enjoyed driving, they discussed the possibility of delivery driving, which he was also interested in.
Ananya let the employer engagement team know to expand their search for Guy to include delivery driving.
Shortly after this the team called with a job opportunity and Guy successfully landed the role.
“He thanked me for believing in him, and helping him to identify what he can do,” said Ananya.
“Guy has quickly become one of his employers’ favourite staff members. He is happy to be back at work,” said Job Coach Anaya.
