Disability Employment Services client, Darryl, lives with communication impairments including dyslexia and a stutter.
He had been working in a role he very much enjoyed in the seafood processing industry in Geelong for more than 30 years. He was connected to Libby, at the atWork Australia office in Moolap, when he suddenly found himself out of work, having been let go by his previous employer.
Darryl shared with Libby that due to the small local seafood community in Geelong, he was concerned for his reputation within the industry and how he may be perceived.
“During our early appointments I discovered that Darryl was using his termination letter as a substitute for his resume,” said Libby.
Having not searched for a job for some time, Darryl believed the letter showed his employment history.
He came to understand that he needed support to adjust his job seeking strategy.
“I helped Darryl write a great resume which was a true reflection of his abilities in the industry he loved, and I acted as a referee for his job seeking efforts,” said Libby.
Darryl indicated he loved fishing on the NSW Coast and went there as frequently as he could. Armed with this knowledge, Libby and Darryl consulted a map and found multiple Seafood Processing employers in his favourite area.
He was excited about the prospect of moving to his favourite place, so Libby began to call employers in the area. This was a big support to Darryl due to his challenges with communication.
“The very first employer, South Coast Fish, was happy to do an online interview,” said Libby. “The interview was a success, and Darryl was offered a job, on the spot, to start as soon as he could move to NSW.”
“Darryl was excited to make a new start where he was not plagued by feelings of concern about what people may have been saying about the circumstances on leaving his previous job.”
The atWork Australia team supported Darryl to make the move by purchasing a ferry ticket and providing him with a fuel voucher for the drive. This enabled Darryl to hit the highway in his self-contained van and start his new adventure.
“Darryl expressed his happiness at living in one of the most beautiful parts of Australia,” said Libby.
“He has an employer who regards him very highly and he is thriving in his new role.”
“What a beautiful place I get to live and work in. A big thank you to atWork Australia,” said Darryl.
“Darryl is a bloody good fit here. We are so glad that he’s working with us,” said JP.
