First Nations client, Travis, recently re-connected with atWork Australia in Morley, Western Australia.
He had been on country for the past two years and had recently returned after completing mentoring and cultural training programs in Narrogin. He was now looking for a fresh start in Perth.
Travis was living with unstable housing, he was couch surfing, and he had limited transport options without a driver’s licence.
He was connected with Employer Engagement Consultant, Sarah, for support to be connected to a supportive and inclusive employer.
Sarah had been engaging with an employer, RTRS, and with the support of his Job Coach, Travis was supported to complete his forklift licence so he could apply for a role with RTRS.
Sarah organised an interview for Travis which resulted in a full-time role with the possibility for FIFO work within six months with the same employer.
He was supported with interview clothing to boost his confidence.
Without a licence or permanent location, Travis sometimes struggled to attend work on time. Sarah worked with the employer to negotiate flexible start times.
atWork Australia also supported Travis with an e-scooter which improved his ability to get to and from work.
“With the purchase of the e-scooter, Travis’s travel time was significantly reduced. He was able to arrive to work on time, and often arrived early now,” said Sarah.
Travis is now employed as a drill bit sharpener and is looking forward to securing permanent housing.
“This has been a successful experiment,” said Travis new employer.
“We appreciate Travis and want to keep him with us. We will be offering a permanent role once he has completed his three-month probationary.”
“I love my new job. The team here are supportive and I want to work for them for a long time.” said Travis.
