Previous client, Ashley recently attended the atWork Australia office, to share his journey and the positive impact person-centred support had on him.
Ashley also shared that eleven months prior, he would not have been able to speak in front of a room, highlighting the significant confidence growth he has achieved through support and self-development.
When now Service Manager, Sarah, first connected with Ashley, he had low confidence.
“Ashley presented with limited confidence and a strong belief that his past experiences would prevent him from achieving positive outcomes. He had previously disengaged from support services, having felt that his barriers were used to limit opportunity rather than guide his growth,” said Service Manager, Sarah.
Through consistent support, and active listening, focusing on Ashley’s strengths and not his barriers, he gradually began to rebuild belief in himself.
With encouragement and practical guidance, he demonstrated resilience and commitment, ultimately establishing his own business, which has since grown into a successful and impactful charity, Breaking the Cycle Tassie, supporting youth and individuals experiencing homelessness.
As part of his continued growth and leadership development, Ashley returned to atWork Australia to speak the team about his journey and the impact effective, compassionate support can have on clients. During this discussion, when asked what differed in his experience, Ashley said: “Sarah cared. Other providers used my barriers as a barrier. Sarah didn’t. She listened, she cared, and she supported me.”
In recognition of Ashley’s work and the outcomes being achieved through his charity, atWork Australia donated items to Breaking the Cycle Tassie to assist youth and individuals experiencing homelessness.
Ashley now operates confidently in a leadership role, giving back to the community and supporting others to overcome similar barriers. His progress reflects both personal determination and the value of genuine, consistent engagement in employment services.
