After dedicating the last 20 years to caring full-time for his son, who lives with a disability, Matthew was ready to re-enter the workforce.
Despite being away from employment for an extended period, he remained motivated and eager to work.
Job Coach, Tammy, encouraged Matthew and let him know that his transferrable skills such as reliability, and a willingness to work hard, where valued by employers.
“His years as a carer have equipped Matthew with exceptional patience, responsibility, time management, problem-solving abilities, and dedication, all of which are highly transferable to employment,” said Tammy.
“It has been inspiring to see his enthusiasm and commitment to returning to work, and he has approached the process with resilience and optimism.”
To support Matthew, reach his employment goals, Tammy supported him to gain qualifications such as a white card, and forklift licence.
Matthew was keen to find employment in an active hands-on role.
Recognising his potential, Tammy suggested Matthew attend an employer information session with our Employer Engagement team member, Mary.
Mary thought Matthew was a strong candidate for the role and encouraged the employer to see his transferrable skills.
With the atWork Australia team supporting his application, the employer was happy to give Matthew a go as a machine operator.
“This role was a great fit as it provided the hands-on work he was looking for and aligned with his interests and capabilities,” said Tammy.
“The role has provided Matthew with an opportunity to get back into a routine, get out of the house, and regain his independence after spending many years as a full-time carer.”
“I am quite proud of how far I have come. Now there are more doors opened every day,” said Matthew.
“I am still looking to expand my skills and experience. Tammy has been amazing and gone above and beyond to help me out.”
