James first connected with atWork Australia with experience in security work, and passenger driving.
He had recently been working as an Uber driver when he unfortunately had to sell his car, leaving him unemployed.
James moved to Australia as a refugee and needed some assistance with his written English skills.
atWork Australia connected James to the Adult Migrant English Program (AMEP) for support. During this time, James shared with his Job Coach, Shelby, that he was interested in gaining employment in the mining industry. His long-term goal was to work as a bus driver in the industry.
Shelby supported James to be as prepared as possible for any mining roles including completing his Certificate III in Civil Construction, gaining his responsible service of alcohol ticket, and obtaining his passenger transport driver’s licence.
“Once James has the qualifications, he took every opportunity to find employment in the industry,” said Shelby.
atWork Australia has a good relationship with employer, Sodexo, who works with the mining industry in hospitality and utilities. Together, atWork Australia and Sodexo, have created a unique pre-employment program to support clients into these roles. James was referred to the program which resulted in gaining an interview with Sodexo.
“James is now employed with the FIFO company which will help him get his foot in the door where he can gain experience and network to eventually obtain his ideal role as a bus driver,” said Shelby.
Shelby called James to offer support during his first weeks in the new fly in, fly out role, and to ensure he had support to get to the airport for his first flight.
James is now working full time and enjoying his new role.
“Thank you so much for all your help getting me this job. I am very grateful,” said James.
