Culturally tailored support helps Albert make progress towards employment

First Nations client, Albert, came to atWork Australia having been recently released. He wanted to keep his life on track but didn’t know what kind of work he wanted to do, or where to really start.

He was living with mental health conditions impacting his mood, motivation and self-confidence.

Albert was an early school leaver and had low literacy and numeracy skills. His only work experience was delivering furniture for six months.

His Job Coach, Diana, referred Albert to our in-house Wellness Services for support with his wellbeing. While Albert appreciated the offer, he had no way of participating in the counselling sessions as he did not own a mobile phone.

atWork Australia supported him to purchase a phone to participate in Wellness but to also be available to be contacted about future work opportunities.

As Albert also didn’t know what his employment goals were, Diana referred him to our Jobs for the Mob program which supports First Nations clients with pre-employment skills including goal setting.

Jobs for the Mob supports clients in a culturally appropriate setting. In addition to goal setting, the program connects clients to First Nations employers, and other support systems such as gaining identification.

“After participating in Jobs for the Mob, Albert was starting to make small positive changes,” said Diana.

“As part of the program Albert had gained his identification documents, something he hadn’t had before.”

After showing progress in the program, Diana and the atWork Australia team referred him to MobReady. An external organisation who provides socially inclusive group training and mentoring for First Nations to progress them into employment.

Albert is due to have his first session in the coming weeks and the atWork Australia team will continue to support him as he makes small steps towards progress.

“Thanks, atWork Australia, and Diana, for being supportive and listening to me,” said Albert.

Every year, atWork Australia help thousands of clients like Albert expand their skills and qualifications to help them gain the right job with the right employer. Call us today on 1300 080 856 or enquire online to find out how we can help you meet your career goals.
