64-year-old, Disability Employment Services client, Jean, moved to Australia as a refugee. Since living in Australia, he hadn’t been able to find meaningful work, and he had lost hope.
Jean lives with medical conditions and needs a role that would match his skills and abilities.
“Jean’s short-term goal is to regain a sense of purpose by working in a supportive environment. One that values his contribution, helping him build confidence and community connections while managing his health,” said Job Coach Tamar.
“In the long term, he hopes to take on more meaningful responsibilities, and create a future where work is not only a source of income, but also a source of pride, belonging, productivity, and personal fulfilment.”
Tamar worked with Jean to tailor support that would help him reach these career goals.
Jean was referred to the Skills for Education and Employment program which develops language, literacy, numeracy and digital skills training.
While he was participating in the program, Tamar spent time speaking with him to understand his strengths, motivations, and limitations.
She used these conversations to encourage and motivate Jean. Tamar also began to contact local employers to find a role that was both suitable for his abilities, and supportive of his circumstances.
“This personalised approach ensured the job I would find for Jean would be not only manageable for his health but also meaningful. Helping him feel valued, productive, and connected to his community,” said Tamar.
Tamar’s approach led to an opportunity that matched Jean’s skills and accommodated his health requirements.
Now Jean is happily working in customer service and proud of what he achieved.
“This job has boosted Jean’s self-belief, giving him renewed confidence and a more positive outlook,” said Tamar.
“His family feels reassured and proud seeing him engaged and hopeful about the future.”
