“I’m now on my way to achieving my dream of becoming a pastry chef.” – Jaydenvvvvvvv

My name is Jayden, and I live with Aspergers Syndrome, but I do not allow this to disadvantage me. I prefer to look at my positive attributes of being an “Aspie” such as being obsessive in my research and quest for knowledge on subjects of interest.

I have a very good memory, follow instructions to a tee and have a keen eye for detail. I have a good work ethic although appreciate a supportive working environment. I can be a bit quirky but most of all I am friendly and loyal.

I commenced my employment journey in 2013 by volunteering with various organisations in different roles and in 2014 I gained casual work.

I completed a Certificate III in Commercial Cookery in 2020 and have always been interested in patisserie work.

I became a client of atWork Australia in March 2020.

atWork Australia assisted me with marketing me to potential employers, resume preparation, job referrals, and interview preparation including mock interviews.  I also had an opportunity to attend a work trial with a potential employer. In Feb 2021, atWork Australia found me employment with my current employer as a kitchen hand in busy group of restaurants. A month later I was offered permanent part time employment.

atWork Australia has been there with me throughout my employment journey and has assisted me with the cost of work clothes. They continue to support me via regular catchups where I have been able to discuss and debrief on workplace issues or discuss health challenges which were impacting on my work. I receive help and encouragement.

I am fortunate to have a supportive employer which has from time to time provided me with opportunities to learn new skills, however opportunities for advancement have been limited and my dreams of becoming a pastry chef were shelved.

In late 2024 my In-Work Support Coach, Ken, began exploring upskilling with me to help me expand my employment opportunities and after discussing my passion for patisserie, Ken offered me assistance with the cost of short courses to enhance my patisserie skills. After completing a short course in making macaroons, my employer gave me the opportunity to apply my new patisserie skills to making macaroons for sale over the festive season and Valentines Day 2025. The initial batch of 2000 macarons sold out and over the few months up to 10,000 macaroons were sold generating a significant profit for my employer. As a result of this success, my employer promoted me and I now work as a Prep Chef in the pasty and deserts section of the restaurant.

“I’m now on my way to achieving my dream of becoming a pastry chef,” said Jayden.
