Melissa had been working as a Barista. She first connected with atWork Australia when she needed some time off work to recover from surgery.
Initially Melissa shared with her Job Coach, Tahlia, that she was content to return to Barista work once she was able.
However, as they began to build rapport, Melissa shared that she was interested in seeking more fulfillment from work now that her children were all teenagers at high school.
Melissa knew she wanted to help people but was unsure what she could do as all of Melissa’s work history was in retail and hospitality.
Together, Melissa and Job Coach, Tahlia, discussed what roles Melissa might enjoy. They decided on support work and together created strong applications for roles.
Melissa sometimes felt she wasn’t good enough, but Tahlia reminded Melissa she was capable, with many strengths and abilities that employers would be looking for.
She was then supported to enrol at The Gordon to study qualifications in support work.
Two weeks into starting study, Tahlia asked Melissa if she was interested in a role at Full Spectrum Solutions. Tahlia had a good business relationship with the owner and felt the job would be the perfect fit for Melissa.
“Melissa at first thought that this was all happening very quickly but after some reassurance Melissa was 100% in,” said Tahlia.
Tahlia assisted Melissa with enrolling for her First Aid certificate, obtained a Birth Cert, working with children and NDIS check, and Police Check.
Without support from atWork Australia, Melissa would not have been in a financial position to gain all the required checks, and paperwork in time for the interview.
“Melissa landed the job,” said Tahlia.
“She now feels more confident in herself and proud that she has made the steps to return to study after having children, and then to find employment in an industry where she feels she is making a real difference every day.”
This role suited Melissa as she is able to continue with her study and select clients and hours that worked around her study, parenting, and other commitments.
“Job Coach, Tahlia, was fantastic to work with, and went out of her way to help me secure employment,” said Melissa.
