Living with Cerebral Palsy, 31-year-old, Luke, had never previously been employed. However, he remained motivated to explore different pathways and opportunities, until he found one that was a perfect fit.
“Having never worked before, Luke was eager to increase his independence, confidence and community participation while finding meaningful work suited to his strengths and interests,” said his Job Coach, Shona.
With the support of atWork Australia, Luke explored a range of work environments. Then one day when he visited Café La Wheels, a café operated by NDIS clients along with support workers that he felt this could be the right job.
The café is decked out in vintage memorabilia, retro booths, neon lights and has a classic jukebox.
Job Coach, Shona, organised a ‘meet and greet’ onsite with manager Trish, attended by Luke and his dad. From the moment they arrived, Luke was made to feel welcomed and comfortable.
“Luke has been an absolute pleasure to have as part of the Cafe La’ Wheels team. In such a short time we have already seen an increase in his confidence and communication,” said employer Trish.
“He is becoming more comfortable interacting with customers, and staff, and is showing great pride in his work. Luke fits in well with the team and we are excited to continue to watch him grow.”
Luke is now thriving in employment. Assisting customers with orders and serving food and beverages.
“This opportunity will have a positive impact on Luke and his family by supporting Luke to build confidence, independence, and valuable workplace skills in a safe and supportive environment,” said Shona.
“I really enjoy coming to Cafe La’ Wheels because everyone is friendly and makes me feel welcome,” said Luke.
