At 19 years old, client Xavier, who lives with disability, had written at the top of his resume that ‘his goal in life is to obtain and pursue a career.’
Xavier has worked hard to upskill himself in various industries including Horticulture and Supply Chain Operations. With atWork Australia’s support he also gained a food handling certificate and responsible service of alcohol certificate.
Xavier shared with employer engagement consultant, Lisa, that he was keen to become more financially independent.
Soon the local IGA approached Lisa with a role available as a register cashier. They were open to employing anyone if they were reliable and had good customer service skills.
Lisa thought of Xavier and supported him to practice mock interviews before she connected him to the employer.
Lisa then accompanied Xavier to the interview where he presented himself professionally and landed the job.
“Xavier takes everyone at face value, it does not matter if you’re a 10-year-old, elderly or even. Me, the store manager – he treats everyone the same way,” said his new employer, Lorraine.
For Xavier he is enjoying, “remembering regular customer needs and having the ability to interact with customers.”
“One customer only likes to come through my register because we have developed rapport,” said Xavier.
atWork Australia is grateful to have supported Xavier to take his first steps towards his life goal of a meaningful career.
Through hard-work, determination and dependability, Xavier has now also been offered a supervisor role, which will lead to additional tasks, responsibilities, and further weekly hours.
“We need more people like Xavier. Xavier is a great addition to our team,” said Lorraine.
Every year, atWork Australia help thousands of clients like Xavier expand their skills and qualifications to help them gain the right job with the right employer. Call us today on 1300 080 856 or enquire online to find out how we can help you meet your career goals.
