Debbie experienced a workplace incident which left her with a back injury. She spent five years out of work and is also now living with anxiety.
In January 2026, atWork Australia connected Debbie to what she described as her dream job
She landed an interview but a few days before hand she was advised she might lose her home.
With the threat of unstable housing looming, Debbie’s focus turned to this more pressing concern, and she couldn’t attend the interview. The role went to someone else.
After this incident, her mental health was further exaggerated, and she began to feel like she couldn’t work.
Job Coach, David, referred Debbie to complete some modules in our Positivium program focused on mindset, wellness, and work.
“atWork Australia have given me the confidence to job search, which I was not confident in doing in the past,” said Debbie.
She began to apply for work and gained work cleaning approximately five hours a week. She was loving the job but soon realised that the requirement to lift heavy rubber mats was not going to be suitable with her back injury.
Instead of feeling defeated, Debbie with the support of her Job Coach, David, learnt that sometimes it takes a bit of time to find something that is the right fit.
“I encouraged Debbie to keep trying, as sometimes it takes time for the right job to come along,” said David.
“Debbie felt like her back injury and mental health excluded her for the workforce. She now continues to look for work that will be the right fit.”
Debbie continues to job search and apply for roles she thinks would be suitable for her.
“My Job Coach and atWork Australia are always available to assist me when I need it,” said Debbie.
