Max’s journey to paid employment began when he entered the atWork Australia office in Moorabbin. He met with Job Coach, Leonard, and they spoke about Max’s past, his present, and his goals for the future.
Max lives with an intellectual disability, and was currently enjoying volunteer work, but he really wanted paid employment. With limited work experience, Max was finding it difficult to get a start with any employers.
With the help of his Job Coach, they applied for roles, but he still wasn’t successful. With Max’s confidence beginning to decline, Leonard, suggest a return to volunteering.
Max began volunteering at a hospital, supporting patients in and out of the hospital. He was really enjoying the experience, so Leonard suggested completing a Certificate III in Health Services Assistance.
Leonard rang the local Tafe on Max’s behalf and organaised for Max, supported by a support worker, to attend an information session.
After the session, Max was excited to progress. So, Leonard negotiated with the Tafe for Max to attend classes with his Support Worker. Agreeing that the Support Worker would not support Max during exams but would help him understand the content along the way.
Through Max’s volunteering, he had a good relationship with a hospital who supported Max to complete the placement hours required to successfully complete his course.
Following the placement, Max gained employment at the same hospital working eight hours a week.
“Max shared that he likes to help people and making a difference in their lives,” said Leonard.
“He more confident and has improved his social skills. He now has friends within the hospital system. He can work on his own and is working more than his required hours.”
“Max is very proud of what he has accomplished so far. He is looking forward to continuing not only his personal growth but growth within the hospital system long term,” said Leonard.
