Damien is a qualified cleaner and was hoping to return to the industry after a period of unemployment. He had been put forward for several cleaning roles, however most of these positions were not suited to Damien’s barriers.

Damien lives with a hearing impairment as well as spinal concerns, which has contributed to the challenges of taking on most jobs

Many cleaning roles were hard on Damien’s back, as the industrial vacuum cleaners, required for such roles, had been too heavy to push considering his injury. In addition, the subsequent industrial cleaning roles were not sustainable for Damien, as he could not hear the people or operations on the floor.

The team at atWork Australia Ipswich, consisting of Job Coaches and Employer Engagement Consultants supported Damien with updating his resume and contacting many potential employers in the local region to find out what was available to him.

Damien was proactive in looking for work prior to gaining his current role. With any unsuccessful attempts with finding work, Damien did not let emotion bring him down but rather, he would nobly continue on his journey in search for the job that was right for him.

In July of 2020, the cleaning company who service atWork Australia sites in the Ipswich region, happened to be recruiting. atWork Australia’s Employer Engagement Consultant recognised this and asked that they give Damien a shot as he fit the criteria perfectly.

Through hard work, persistence and positive thinking, Damien successfully gained employment as a cleaner however, his car broke down, which had the potential to place his job in jeopardy. Thankfully, atWork Australia was able to help Damien with repairs to his vehicle. He was back on the road and able to attend work again.

Damien was humbled to have been offered the job and was given a backpack vacuum cleaner, which reduces the impact to his back.

Job Coach Judy said that “Damien was really happy and excited to be starting work again and often jokes about how atWork Australia has become his client”.

Judy also mentioned that Damien loves his job and is grateful that he persisted with atWork Australia. He said, “atWork Australia supported me to find the best job that supports my injury and has good hours of work.”

Every year, atWork Australia helps thousands of clients like Damien expand their skills and qualifications to help them gain the right job with the right employer. Call us today on 1300 080 856 or enquire online to find out how we can help you meet your career goals.
