Blake, 28, from Fairfield, NSW lives with anxiety, depression, paranoia, insomnia and persistent low mood which makes interacting with other people difficult. In the past, Blake has faced challenges with housing, limited education, past substance abuse and prior experience with the justice system.

Blake was determined to turn his life around and not miss out on any opportunities anymore, including finding and sustaining employment and making him less dependent on the people around him.

He connected with atWork Australia in Fairfield where he met his Job Coach, Long. Together, they created a Job Plan and identified potential employment paths taking into consideration Blake’s barriers towards work and focusing on his capabilities and strengths.

Long was able to secure a role as a Cleaning Hygiene Operator for Blake which he enjoys. Blake is supported in his role by Post Placement Support to ensure that he has all necessary backing to remain in employment.

Long says: “Blake had been trying to find employment for a long time and when he finally secured employment, he was relieved, happy and smiling. You could tell that a lot of pressure was off his shoulders.”

Long was able to secure Blake’s job in the middle of the NSW COVID-19 lockdown. Blake got vaccinated early on during the pandemic, as it has become a requirement for many roles.

Blake’s employment journey has been a personal step towards his individual improvement, and he feels that his choice to join atWork Australia was his best decision ever.

Blake said: “Long is the best Job Coach who literally changed my life for the better. I appreciate his help and caring nature to assist others when they need it the most.”

Long says: “Blake has faced challenges in the past, however after getting to know Blake, I’m glad that I could put him on the right path with an opportunity that could change his life for the better.”

This placement was a very special one for Long as it was during the Covid-19 pandemic where opportunities were scarce. “If we had not placed Blake in such a short time, he would have struggled mentally, financially and socially”, says Long.

Blake now has his own apartment, lives with his partner and is satisfied with his work.
