George first came to atWork Australia, Albany, WA, after a recommendation from a friend. He had employment but only had a few hours a week, which wasn’t helping George to achieve his goals.
George’s Job Coach, Sandra, remembers when he first pulled up to the office. “George arrived at the office on his bike which he used to get around with at the time. He wanted to work and find something more suitable to him,” said Sandra.
He lacked self-confidence but was determined and wanted to thrive. Sandra and George started talking about his goals and getting to know one another; then George called Sandra unexpectedly one day.
“George called me because he had seen on Facebook that his favourite café was hiring. He wanted to apply but due to his low self-confidence, he needed our support,” said Sandra.
“We rang the café to set up an interview for George.”
“Before the interview, we coached George on how to appear more confident. We helped him understand the requirements of working in a kitchen and which skills to highlight from his previous experience which may help him in his interview.”
“When I called George to let him know he was successful, he was so excited.”
Very quickly George was offered to learn how to make coffee and is now a Barista.
“George has always been optimistic, positive, and energetic. Seeing him gain employment at his favourite café and then progress into a barista has been a pleasure.”
“We are so happy for him and often go to the café just to see George in action and grab a coffee. He’s our favourite barista.”
Since George has been employed at the café, he has gone on to get his driver’s license; which is a huge achievement.
Sandra said “it has been so rewarding working with George. He is a great example of someone keen to work and willing to grab every opportunity that comes his way.”
“We can’t wait to see what is next for George.”
