When Sunday was a toddler, he fought a virus which claimed his hearing.
A Disability Employment Services client, he had been unemployed for three years when he was connected to Job Coach Inga from the atWork Australia office in Chermside, Brisbane.
“When I first met Sunday, he was disheartened and sure he wouldn’t be given a chance with any employers because of his disability,” said Inga.
“When Sunday was offered an interview, he expected the employer to cancel on him before the date. This made me more determined than ever to find Sunday meaningful employment.”
Working to gain Sunday’s trust, Inga helped him to develop confidence again in his employment journey.
She learned of Sunday’s goal to work in landscaping, and they enrolled him in a white card course, while Inga made sure there was an interpreter available to attend the course with him.
“Once Sunday was qualified, I approached an employer to give Sunday a trial. The employer was hesitant at first, but I explained Sunday needed an opportunity to show case his abilities above his disability. I expressed my confidence in Sunday being reliable and willing to show up, work hard and that he would be loyal.”
As soon as the employer met Sunday, he offered him a job trial.
“On his first day, I printed out instructions for his new employer outlining the best methods of communication and provided my business card attached as an added measure of support.”
Sunday was so excited to start work, when he received the official job offer, he was smiling, clapping and kept thanking me.
“I assisted Sunday to purchase all his work gear (work boots, pants, hi-vis shirts) ready for his job.”
“I was able to negotiate a job that met Sunday’s needs and the employer is outstanding. He labelled equipment and he learnt basic sign language to communicate effectively.”
