Pauline (55) had been unemployed for four years whilst living with chronic pain, which required surgery. She had recently moved to Albany (WA), and lived in a caravan park with cramped conditions, which compounded her chronic pain.

Pauline reported not being able to sit or stand for long, on account of her reduced mobility and these ongoing health concerns impacted on her motivation, confidence and overall self-esteem. Not knowing anyone in her new area of residence contributed to her sense of isolation.

Fortunately, Pauline was able to engage with Albany atWork Australia office where she gained immediate empathy and support from Job Coach Michelle. It was apparent that Pauline needed coaching to improve her motivation and Michelle in turn applied techniques to help build on her self-esteem and confidence.

Job Coach Michelle reminded Pauline of the great skills that she possessed that could assist an employer and in addition, Michelle worked on her resume and interviewing techniques as well as advocating Pauline to potential employers on her behalf.

This resulted in the first job interview that she’d had for some time and despite her uncertainty of how she would be able to change things around for the better, she felt supported and understood. Pauline mentioned that she was treated fairly, with genuine individual considerations.  She soon saw a big shift in her, not only in her self-esteem and confidence, but a newfound realisation that she has a lot to offer an employer and her community.

A job vacancy for a Customer Support Consultant for atWork Australia became available and Michelle suggested that she go for it. After the interview, Pauline admitted that, she thought she hadn’t been successful in getting the job as she hadn’t heard anything for a couple of weeks. But when she got the phone call to say she had been successful, she felt shock and disbelief. This quickly transformed into great happiness.

Pauline was, and is, still very thankful for the support she received from her Job Coach Michelle. She said, “Michelle has been a great motivator, she’s friendly, cheerful and always genuine.” Job Coach Michelle said, “Pauline is super happy that I was able to identify the right job for her that ended up being the perfect fit.”

Pauline continued, ”I am no longer sitting at home thinking about my pain, I am now assisting people with their futures, by helping them see that they can have a successful future.”

Having Pauline transition from being a client with multiple barriers, to an employee of atWork Australia, it should go without saying that Pauline is an inspiration to each and every client that she services.
