Disability Employment Services client, John, had been a Chef for most of his life, until his health deteriorated in his 50’s.
He started working with the atWork Australia team in Reservoir, Victoria unsure he would ever return to the workforce.
At this point in his life, he had undergone 11 surgeries, and was wary of the support that could be provided by an employment services provider.
“When I first phoned John, he was very gruff,” said his Job Coach Ann-Marie.
“I took the time to really listen to what John was telling me, and to the ways I could support him.”

John wanted to do something a little bit active, within his health limitations, and was only looking for part-time work. He thought cleaning could be a great option for him within these parameters.
He was connected with a cleaning role, and when he became uncomfortable in his role, Ann-Marie started looking for other opportunities.
“I found him a more suitable position with a smaller family run business, and it seems to be a great fit.”
atWork Australia also assisted financially with food vouchers when John had another emergency surgery over Christmas.
John is enjoying his new role, and regularly calls into the office at Reservoir.
Due to Johns ongoing health concerns, he is still supported by the atWork Australia team, so that if his circumstances change, he has the right support from someone who really listens.
