After a long period of unemployment, Prue was finding it challenging to find employment that would accommodate her physical medical condition along with her school pick-up commitments for her kids. Prue felt like she was stuck in a cycle and started losing faith.

From Drysdale, Victoria, Prue needed flexibility with her work. She needed to be able to have a seated job where she could stand up as needed, with no lifting of bending. Prue also needed to be able to attend medical appointments, hydrotherapy, and pick up her kids from school.

When Prue met her Job Coach, Amy, her mindset changed. Prue was supported by a Job Coach who was very considerate and understanding. Amy helped Prue explore different avenues for employment; with a diverse skillset, Prue lacked recent experience for the administration roles that she had been applying for. Amy helped Prue refine her resume, made suggestions for cover letters, recommended her to different employers that had work that would suit her requirements, and gave her confidence.

atWork Australia supported Prue by covering travel costs, uniforms and training courses as well as offering wage subsidies. Prue said, “atWork Australia have allowed me to explore various career paths and job opportunities to ensure longevity, and finally I was able to narrow down my search for sustainable employment”.

Prue said when she was told she had been offered the job at Art’skool she was ecstatic and enthusiastic to begin working saying “it is the type of role and conditions I have always wanted, not everyone is as lucky as me”.

“It is such a relief to be in employment that I want to go to each day, it feels like my interests, love of people, fashion/art and admin have all been rolled into one”, Prue said.

In addition to the employment support, Amy also referred Prue to a grief counselor to guide her through a recent family loss. By focusing on her mental health, Prue was able to feel more in control and confident when looking for work.

Prue said she now “has more purpose to get up each day… which helps [her] overall happiness. [She] has found a way to use all those transferrable skills and life experiences”.
