Todd is celebrating almost two years at IGA Leongatha and says that work has made him feel “comfortable and confident.” It has helped him come a long way from the shy job seeker who struggled with confidence when he first met Job Coach Stephanie a number of years ago.
When Todd first registered with Work Solutions Gippsland (part of the atWork Australia group) he was looking for lasting work in his local community. He had previously worked at a café, but that work had ceased due to a downturn in business – something that was happening across the board in the small regional town.
Undeterred, Todd began to attend fortnightly appointments with Stephanie to prepare himself for another opportunity. Together, they researched Todd’s employment interests and goals, then reviewed what type of work would be suitable for his capabilities.
Soon after, a role came up at the local IGA in Leongatha. IGA has been a long-time supporter of employing people with disability, knowing that this helps them to best reflect the members of the local community.
When he found out he had the job, Todd was understandably excited and also nervous. Stephanie helped him to prepare by supporting him through the induction training and helping him to understand the company policies and procedures.
Todd’s initial role was to stack and restock shelves, retrieve trolleys and assist customers in finding products within the store. Over the past two years, he has grown both personally and professionally, and is now called in for extra shifts.
“I am happy with the job and what I have to do each shift,” says Todd.
Finding work, and keeping it for such a long time, has been a significant achievement for Todd, especially when local businesses have been doing it tough.
As for IGA, they are delighted to have a reliable and loyal team member.
“Many people with disabilities have the necessary and valuable skills, qualifications and experience to be a valued member of the workplace. Todd is a pleasure to have on our team,” says IGA Leongatha Manager, Collin.
Finding and sustaining meaningful work within the local community for people with disability is what we do best. We look forward to assisting many more people, just like Todd. Call us today on 1800 684 255 or enquire online.
