Elizabeth Vale (SA) local, Joshua, had found himself isolated during the lockdown periods over the past couple of years. Post Covid-19, Joshua felt anxious about leaving the house and being around people. He had become self-conscious and had low self-esteem. This had a significant impact on seeking employment.
Joshua decided he needed additional support, so reached out to the Elizabeth Vale team and was connected with Job Coach Corey.
Corey spent time with Joshua to help build his confidence; working together on strategies to overcome the feelings of anxiety and low self-esteem.
Joshua was confident with the online reporting platform for Workforce Australia, however, he recognised that he needed to build his skills to build his employability.
Thus, Corey enrolled Joshua in the Employability Skills Training course run by an external Registered Training Organisation. The course enables clients to learn essential workplace skills such as communication, decision making and problem solving. The course also includes industry awareness experiences to give clients an insight into the tasks and duties of different industries.
Corey said, “The course assisted Joshua to establish a routine and gain confidence to seek meaningful employment.”
It was during this course that Joshua made conversation with his peers regarding their work history and career goals. One of his peers knew of an employment opportunity and Joshua asked for Corey’s support to apply for the role.
Joshua was successful in landing a casual role as a Console Operator. He said, “I am now feeling great. I’d say overall about a four-out-of-five. I’m enjoying working in a smaller team.”
Corey said, “Joshua has gained so much confidence and has become brighter and more confident.
“Joshua has stated that the feeling of becoming employed has given a better sense of routine and he feels like he is breaking his social-anxiety barrier”.
After three years of unemployment, Joshua said, “I am feeling my old-self coming back”.
“Employment has given me routine.”
