For the past ten years, Hayden has been unemployed. He had been volunteering, but he was desperate to find paid employment. Hayden found it challenging to find the right support; someone who would be patient and could guide him through the process to help him find employment.
Hayden’s luck was about to change when he came to atWork Australia’s Disability Employment Services, Mandurah, WA, office. Hayden was introduced to his Job Coach, Jacob, and within months, Hayden had secured paid employment.
Hayden lives with anxiety and becomes very anxious through the interview process, when meeting new people and when starting a new job. Jacob thought Hayden would benefit from more one-on-one training, rather than group sessions. Jacob began coaching Hayden, with the assistance of his support worker, to improve his interview skills and build his confidence to engage with people. Hayden’s Job Coach, Jacob, said, “I could see Hayden was benefiting from the one-on-one support, his confidence was starting to grow.”
Over the next few months, Hayden and his Job Coach, Jacob, continued working together to prepare Hayden for employment. Hayden’s persistence and courage to put himself forward for new opportunities was paying off. He was able to secure a position as a Mill Hand, working 24 hours a week. Hayden said, “I felt massive reassurance knowing I could overcome my anxiety. It felt like my disability stopped me from gaining employment, now I feel like a normal person.”
This is a fantastic outcome for Hayden, he was incredibly grateful for the support and patience from his Job Coach, Jacob. Employment has not only positively impacted Hayden’s life, but his family is happy to know he is doing well.
