From Baldivis, WA, Disability Employment Services client, Michael, was unemployed for nearly 13 years after an assault left him with a brain injury.
Michael was in a coma for 16 days and now lives with paralysis in his left hand and wrist, as well as the ongoing trauma and post-traumatic stress of the incident.
Hoping to get back into work, the 55-year-old reached out to the atWork Australia team in Rockingham for additional support. Local Job Coach, Tayla, got to know Michael and his goals. He was eager to find employment and “stop sitting around doing nothing and feeling sorry for himself”.
With the motivation to get going, Tayla was able to assist Michael finding work; she put him forward for multiple roles, as well as some job trials to help build his confidence and experience.
Michael kept a positive mindset throughout the whole process and never gave up when things didn’t go to plan. Tayla assisted Michael to create a new resume and following up on jobs he was interested in applying for.
Before too long, Michael secured a casual gardening position. Tayla supported Michael financially to purchase the PPE he needed for the job.
He was thrilled to have reached his goals and is grateful for the support he received from Tayla and the support he continues to receive from his In-Work Support Coach, Chloe.
Michael said, “It’s been great; being able to get back into work after nearly 13 years has been great. It has helped me reach other goals too – learning the proper way to do things and not taking shortcuts. It also gives me more motivation to use the skills I am learning at work in other ways too.”
